Custom Barndominiums Built by Steel Structures America

A barndominium Idaho property owners have been dreaming about is closer to reality than most people realize, and Steel Structures America has been making it happen across the state since 1995. Whether you own rural acreage in North Idaho, land in the Treasure Valley outside Boise, a ranch spread in eastern Idaho, or a parcel anywhere in between, SSA designs and builds custom barndominiums that combine a durable post-frame structure with finished, comfortable living space and as much shop or garage room as you could want.

Based in Post Falls with a second sales office in Sagle, SSA is Idaho’s most experienced and locally rooted barndominium builder. With more than 15,000 completed structures across Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming, we bring a depth of regional construction knowledge that out-of-state online kit companies simply cannot match.

Why Post Frame

Why Idaho Property Owners Choose Barndominiums

Idaho has become one of the most popular states for barndominium construction in the country, and the reasons are not hard to understand. The combination of affordable rural land, a culture that values self-sufficiency and property ownership, wide-open spaces that lend themselves to large structures, and a building code environment that is workable for post-frame construction makes Idaho a genuinely excellent place to build a barndo.
Here is what drives property owners and businesses across Idaho toward metal building construction:

Built for Idaho Weather

Every SSA barndominium is individually engineered to handle the specific snow and wind load requirements of your site, from the Idaho panhandle to the high desert south of Twin Falls.

Fully Custom

Every SSA building is designed from scratch. Size, layout, siding, roofing, overhead doors, insulation, lofts, lean-tos, and more are all specified to fit your property and your goals.

Efficient Build Process

Pre-engineered components and in-house manufacturing streamline construction and reduce delays compared to traditional home builds.

Better Long-term Value

Lower maintenance, durable materials, and efficient construction make post-frame a smarter long-term investment than stick built.

Low Maintenance

No painting, no rot, no termites. Steel structures require virtually zero maintenance year after year.

Purpose Flexibility

Every SSA building is designed from scratch. Size, layout, siding, roofing, overhead doors, insulation, lofts, lean-tos, and more are all specified to fit your property and your goals.

What We Build

What an SSA Barndominium Looks Like

SSA doesn’t sell cookie-cutter barndominium kits. Every building we design
starts with a conversation about your land, your intended use, your household
needs, and your budget. From there, our design team builds a custom
structure around those specifics.

Here is a look at the most common barndominium configurations we build across Idaho.

Barndominium Type Typical Size Key Features
Shop-Primary Barndo 40x60 to 60x100 Large shop with living quarters on one end
Home-Primary Barndo 1,800 to 3,500+ sq ft Full living space with attached garage or shop
Shouse / Shop Home 40x80 to 60x120 Equal or near-equal shop and living square footage
Barndo with Loft 1,500 to 3,000+ sq ft Main floor living with loft sleeping or office above
Hobby Barn with Quarters 40x60 to 50x80 Self-storage, warehouses, contractor yards, light industrial
Agricultural Barndo 60x100 to 80x160 Working farm barn with attached residential wing

Built for How You Actually Use It

Whether you want open living space, room for a workshop, or a place to
combine both, your barndominium is designed around how you will use it.

Barndominium Builders in North Idaho and Coeur d’Alene

SSA’s home base is Post Falls, Idaho, which puts our team in the heart of the North Idaho barndominium market. Kootenai County, Bonner County, Shoshone County, and the communities across the Idaho panhandle have seen strong demand for barndominium construction as buyers relocate to rural and semi-rural properties across the region.

North Idaho’s landscape makes it an exceptional setting for a barndominium. Properties on forested hillsides outside Coeur d’Alene, waterfront parcels near Hayden Lake or Spirit Lake, rural acreage in Rathdrum and Athol, and ranch land in the Palouse foothills all present opportunities to build a structure that belongs in the environment rather than clashing with it. SSA’s metal siding options, including barnwood printed panels, two-tone combinations, and agricultural color palettes, work naturally in these settings.

North Idaho barndominiums require engineering that accounts for real snow load demands. The mountains and valleys of the panhandle can accumulate significant snow, and a barndominium that is also your primary residence has to be engineered to handle those loads reliably. SSA engineers every North Idaho barndominium to meet or exceed the ground snow load requirements for its specific location using Idaho-licensed engineering professionals. This is not a step you want to skip or cut corners on.

Coeur d'Alene & Kootenai County

Snow loads vary by elevation and site. SSA uses Idaho-licensed engineers and the Ground Snow Loads for Idaho reference to correctly calculate structural requirements for every North Idaho build.

Sandpoint, Bonner & Boundary Counties

Our Sagle office serves Sandpoint and the greater Bonner County area. We have extensive experience with the specific code and climate requirements of the northern Idaho panhandle.

Barndominium Builders in Boise and the Treasure Valley

Demand for barndominiums in the Boise area and across the Treasure Valley has grown alongside the region’s broader population growth. Buyers purchasing rural or semi-rural land in Ada County, Canyon County, Gem County, and surrounding areas are building barndominiums as an alternative to traditional custom home construction, and the economics make sense. A barndominium on your own land in the Treasure Valley gives you the finished home you want, the shop space you need, and a total construction cost that typically comes in well below comparable stick-built custom homes.

Southern Idaho’s engineering requirements differ from North Idaho’s snow-heavy panhandle. Wind loads become a more significant design factor in the high desert regions around Boise, Nampa, Caldwell, and the Snake River Plain. SSA engineers every Treasure Valley barndominium to the specific structural requirements of its site, not to a generic regional standard.

Ada County and Canyon County both require building permits for barndominium construction, with residential code compliance required for the living quarters portion of the structure. SSA manages permit submissions for Treasure Valley clients with the same process we use throughout the state.

Building Options

Customize Your Idaho Barndominium

One of the advantages of working with SSA is the depth of customization available. Your barndominium isn’t a catalog item, it’s a custom structure designed around your land, your use case, and your budget. Here is a look at what you can specify.

Metal Siding and Roofing

SSA owns Metal America and offers more than 50 colors and specialty finishes for metal siding and roofing. This includes standard painted steel in colors from ash gray to charcoal, as well as specialty printed finishes including barnwood, brick, and other decorative options. Two-tone combinations with wainscot accents are popular in Idaho and give buildings a finished, polished look.

Overhead Doors

Your overhead door configuration matters as much as your building dimensions. SSA owns Garage Door Design to supply Therma Tech insulated steel doors and other options in sizes from standard residential widths up to doors large enough for combines and big rig trucks. Matching painted finishes keep your building looking clean and intentional.

Perma-Column Foundations

SSA is a Perma-Column partner, offering precast concrete column foundations as an alternative to traditional buried wood posts. Perma-Column eliminates wood-to-soil contact, which is the primary cause of post rot and structural failure in post-frame buildings over time. If you want a building that holds up for generations without foundation concerns, Perma-Column is worth a conversation.

Lean-Tos and Additions

Many Idaho barndos include lean-tos on one or both sides for additional covered storage, a sheltered equipment staging area, or a covered porch. SSA designs and builds lean-to additions as part of the original structure or as additions to existing buildings.

Lofts and Interior Finishing

For shop and barndominium projects, SSA can include loft floors, interior wall systems, insulation, and finished interior spaces. If you want a shop with a finished office or apartment above, or a barndominium with a modern interior finish package, we design that into the building from the start.

Insulation Systems

For shops, garages, and living spaces in Idaho’s climate, proper insulation is critical. SSA offers spray foam, fiberglass, and rigid board options appropriate for your building’s use.

Why a Barndominium Beats Other Idaho Housing Options for Rural Buyers

Buyers considering a barndominium in Idaho are usually weighing it against at least one other option, and the comparison almost always favors the barndominium for rural property buyers.

Versus a traditional stick-built custom home, a post-frame barndominium delivers a faster construction timeline, lower cost per square foot for the overall structure, and a large attached shop or garage that would cost substantially more to add to a conventional custom home. You give up the conventional home aesthetic if that matters to you, though modern barndominium designs have come a long way toward closing that gap.

Versus a prefab or manufactured home, a barndominium gives you a permanently engineered structure on your property, a custom layout designed around your use case, and the attached shop space that a manufactured home cannot provide. Barndominiums also tend to hold and grow in value better than manufactured housing on rural land.

Versus buying an existing home in a rural Idaho community, a barndominium built on your land gives you the layout you actually want rather than whatever was built decades ago, construction that meets current code and engineering standards, and a shop or garage sized to your actual needs rather than whatever the previous owner happened to build.
