Custom Post-Frame Buildings by Steel Structures America
Pole barns in Colorado need to be built for Colorado, and that means something specific. The Front Range is one of the most demanding building environments in the country, where 115-mile-per-hour wind gusts off the Rockies, heavy mountain snow loads, dramatic temperature swings, and highly variable soil conditions across just a short distance all create structural demands that a generic kit or an out-of-state crew often gets wrong. Steel Structures America has been designing and building custom post-frame structures across Colorado since 1995, with two Colorado sales offices serving the state; Monument at 18910 Base Camp Rd and Longmont at 9518 I-25 Frontage Rd.
With more than 15,000 completed buildings across Colorado, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Wyoming, SSA brings the depth of regional construction knowledge that a kit company or a newer local crew cannot offer. Our Monument office serves the Colorado Springs metro and the territory south of Denver. Our Longmont office covers the Denver metro, the Northern Front Range, Weld County, and the surrounding region. Whether you are building in the shadow of Pikes Peak or on the Eastern Plains outside Greeley, you have a local SSA team to call.

Why Post Frame
Why Colorado Property Owners Choose Pole Barn Construction
Post-frame construction, commonly called pole barn building, is one of the most cost-efficient and versatile ways to put up a large structure in Colorado. The method uses large wood columns anchored in the ground or on concrete piers rather than a traditional continuous foundation, which means less concrete, faster construction timelines, and wide-open clear-span interiors without interior posts eating up usable space. For Colorado property owners, this matters for a lot of reasons:
Built for Colorado Weather
A building on the open Eastern Plains near Greeley faces very different wind exposure from one in a sheltered draw in El Paso County, and SSA’s engineering reflects that difference
Fully Custom
Every SSA building is designed from scratch. Size, layout, siding, roofing, overhead doors, insulation, lofts, lean-tos, and more are all specified to fit your property and your goals.
Efficient Build Process
Pre-engineered components and in-house manufacturing streamline construction and reduce delays compared to traditional home builds.
Better Long-term Value
Lower maintenance, durable materials, and efficient construction make post-frame a smarter long-term investment than stick built.
Low Maintenance
No painting, no rot, no termites. Steel structures require virtually zero maintenance year after year.
Purpose Flexibility
Every SSA building is designed from scratch. Size, layout, siding, roofing, overhead doors, insulation, lofts, lean-tos, and more are all specified to fit your property and your goals.
What We Build
Pole Barn Types for Colorado Properties
Not every Colorado property owner needs the same thing, which is exactly why SSA designs
each building from scratch rather than dropping a cookie-cutter kit on your lot.
Here is a look at the most common types of pole barn projects we build across the state.
| Building Type | Common Sizes | Typical Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Hobby Shop / Toy Storage | 30x40 to 50x80 | RVs, boats, ATVs, side-by-sides, classic cars, home workshops |
| Contractor Shop | 40x60 to 80x120 | Work trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, attached office space |
| Agricultural Barn | 40x60 to 100x200+ | Tractors, combines, hay storage, livestock, farm equipment |
| Barndominium / Shouse | 1,500 to 4,000+ sq ft | Combined home and shop space, rural living with large garage |
| Commercial / Mini Storage | 50x100 to 100x300+ | Self-storage, warehouses, contractor yards, light industrial |
| Garage + Shop Combo | 30x40 to 40x80 | Home garage with workshop space, detached garages with lofts |
Built for How You Actually Use It

Pole Barn Builders in Monument and Colorado Springs
SSA’s Monument office at 18910 Base Camp Rd sits 13 miles north of Colorado Springs and 40 miles south of Denver, positioning our team directly in the El Paso County market that covers Colorado Springs, Monument, Palmer Lake, Black Forest, Falcon, Peyton, and the surrounding communities. This office serves the territory south of Denver across El Paso County and the surrounding region.
El Paso County’s building environment creates specific engineering demands. Wind loads on the Palmer Divide and exposed Front Range benches can be significant, and SSA engineers every building to the actual wind exposure of its specific site rather than to a county-average figure that may under-engineer for exposed locations. Snow loads in the foothills west of Colorado Springs and on the Monument corridor differ from those on the plains to the east, and our engineering accounts for elevation and terrain in every project.
Colorado Springs and the surrounding El Paso County communities use the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD) for permit administration. The PPRBD serves Colorado Springs, Monument, Palmer Lake, Manitou Springs, Fountain, and the unincorporated El Paso County communities including Black Forest, Falcon, and Peyton. Agricultural buildings in unincorporated El Paso County on land zoned agricultural or A-35 may be eligible for a permit exemption — SSA advises on eligibility during the design phase.
Monument and Colorado Springs
Snow loads vary by elevation and site. SSA uses Colorado -licensed engineers and the Ground Snow Loads for Colorado reference to correctly calculate structural requirements for every Monument build.
Longmont and the Denver Metro
Our Longmont office the Colorado Springs market and southern Front Range. We have extensive experience with the specific code and climate requirements of Colorado.

Pole Barn Builders in Longmont and the Denver Metro
SSA’s Longmont office at 9518 I-25 Frontage Rd serves the Denver metro, Weld County, Larimer County, Boulder County, and the broader Northern Front Range. This office covers one of the most active construction markets in Colorado, where population growth and commercial expansion have driven consistent demand for contractor shops, commercial storage facilities, hobby buildings, and agricultural structures across the region’s rural and semi-rural parcels.
Weld County is one of the most agriculturally and economically productive counties in Colorado, combining large-scale agricultural operations with significant oil and gas industry activity and fast-growing residential communities. SSA builds for all of it — farm equipment storage buildings for Weld County’s dryland wheat and irrigated crop operations, contractor and oil field support shops, commercial facilities, and hobby buildings for the growing population buying rural parcels across the county.
Building Options
Customize Your Colorado Pole Barn
One of the advantages of working with SSA is the depth of customization available. Your building isn’t a catalog item, it’s a custom structure designed around your land, your use case, and your budget. Here is a look at what you can specify.
Metal Siding and Roofing
SSA owns Metal America and offers more than 50 colors and specialty finishes for metal siding and roofing. This includes standard painted steel in colors from ash gray to charcoal, as well as specialty printed finishes including barnwood, brick, and other decorative options. Two-tone combinations with wainscot accents are popular in Colorado and give buildings a finished, polished look.
Overhead Doors
Your overhead door configuration matters as much as your building dimensions. SSA owns Garage Door Design to supply Therma Tech insulated steel doors and other options in sizes from standard residential widths up to doors large enough for combines and big rig trucks. Matching painted finishes keep your building looking clean and intentional.
Perma-Column Foundations
SSA is a Perma-Column partner, offering precast concrete column foundations as an alternative to traditional buried wood posts. Perma-Column eliminates wood-to-soil contact, which is the primary cause of post rot and structural failure in post-frame buildings over time. If you want a building that holds up for generations without foundation concerns, Perma-Column is worth a conversation.
Lean-Tos and Additions
Many Colorado pole barn projects include lean-tos on one or both sides for additional covered storage, a sheltered equipment staging area, or a covered porch on a barndominium. SSA designs and builds lean-to additions as part of the original structure or as additions to existing buildings.
Lofts and Interior Finishing
For shop and barndominium projects, SSA can include loft floors, interior wall systems, insulation, and finished interior spaces. If you want a shop with a finished office or apartment above, or a barndominium with a modern interior finish package, we design that into the building from the start.
Insulation Systems
For shops, garages, and living spaces in Colorado’s climate, proper insulation is critical. SSA offers spray foam, fiberglass, and rigid board options appropriate for your building’s use.
