She spent almost 18 years on this land before she knew what she wanted to build on it. Then the projects outgrew the space.
Restoring the land takes equipment, biomass, shelter and shade, and somewhere to keep all of it. Renting studio time by the hour meant losing whole seasons waiting for a window that had already closed. So this 30x84x18 barn in Berthoud, Colorado became the permanent infrastructure the property was missing: covered storage for mulch and soil amendments, protected space for the tractor and skid steer, and room to finally run the projects on her own schedule.
The build includes custom garage doors, timber truss accents, board and batten steel siding, reclaimed wood wainscot, and two oversized cupolas topped with a horse weather vane and an eagle. Her advice on upgrades is simple: take the cupolas, and take the large ones.
The bigger vision goes past the building. A nonprofit that employs people who want to work outside and learn a trade, on land that gets healthier every year. That is the why.

Inside A Generational Shop in Canon City, CO | 42x32x10 | Project 14728
In this customer story, we visit a 42' x 32' x 10' shop in Canon City, Colorado. The owner wanted a flexible, long-lasting building without having to put life on hold during construction. After comparing several builders, he chose Steel Structures America because the process felt responsive, practical, and built around the same vision.
The finished shop includes commercial girts for easier future interior finishing, Perma-Columns® to keep wood above grade, a Burnished Slate roof, and an overhead-door canopy. Because the site sees Colorado wind and cold winters, the team focused on details that support long-term durability.
"Having somebody I could trust that kind of shared the same vision was a really important part for us," the owner said. The project also finished ahead of the planned late-July goal. "That peace of mind was huge."

Custom 60x72x16' Shop with a Copper Roof and Bronze Moose | Redmond, OR | Project 10753 - COPB
He saw a copper roof on a building near the Redmond airport, and that was it. Nothing else would do.
This custom 60' x 72' x 16' post-frame shop in Redmond, Oregon started with that one detail and grew into a space built entirely around how the owner actually lives. Tuff Rib walls in Burnished Slate pair with a standing seam Copper Metallic roof and matching wainscot, while a centered dormer tops the building and opens up the loft above. Inside, there's a lounge area, a fridge for game day, and a wall going up with trophies. Outside, a swing looks out on a full-size bronze bull moose sculpture, on display under a willow tree.
Steel Structures America worked closely with the owner through design changes on the framing and dormer, the kind of detail work that turns a standard shop into a one-of-a-kind build.

This Custom Shop & Garage Was Built for an RV and More | Project 11462
This custom shop and garage in Sisters, Oregon was built by Steel Structures America for a homeowner who needed serious room: a 38-foot fifth wheel, motorcycles, kayaks, a tractor, and everything else that comes with living in Central Oregon.
"We didn't want it to stick out. We wanted it to look like it kind of belonged here," he says, and that shows in the finished build. Tan wall panels with dark brown trim tie the structure into the surrounding ponderosa pines, while a covered lean-to adds shaded storage without adding visual bulk.
Like every custom shop and garage Steel Structures America builds in Sisters, Oregon, this one uses post-frame construction, a method built to handle Central Oregon's snow load and temperature swings. That construction style is also what gave the owner the wide, open bays he needed to fit an RV and multiple vehicles without interior support posts getting in the way. A roof-mounted solar setup keeps his essentials running during outages: "When the whole neighborhood's dark, we're still up and running."

In this episode of Steel Structures Stories, we’re touring a commercial barndominium in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho that was built to combine work and home in one flexible space.
This project is a great example of how a post frame building can support both a business and a home under one roof. Downstairs, the space functions as a storefront, shop, and flexible work area. Upstairs, it transitions into a comfortable and thoughtfully designed living space that feels open, warm, and personal.
John and Arlene originally planned to build this project turnkey, but once they saw the cost, they decided to take a different approach. Instead of walking away from the idea, they built the shell first and finished the interior over time. That decision allowed them to move forward without overextending financially, and years later the building has grown into exactly what they envisioned.
One of the biggest advantages of this building is how adaptable it is. The open layout makes it easy to rework spaces as needs change. The upstairs living area feels much larger than its footprint because of the openness, and the home gym, complete with Peloton bikes and adjustable lighting, shows how personal touches can completely transform a space. There is also a dedicated craft and storage room that makes hosting family gatherings and events simple and organized.
From a construction standpoint, this project includes a 50 foot by 100 foot post-frame building. The structure uses a Perma Column post system, 29 gauge steel roofing and siding, multiple insulated overhead doors including a glass overhead door at the front, and lots of windows.

Project Manager Walkthrough: Custom 40x80 Shop in Parker, CO | Project 14379
Inside a 40' x 80' post-frame shop built for an RV, a car lift, and a full wood shop, tucked right into the corner of a Parker, Colorado property.
The owner started out working from a small shed next to the house and needed room to grow, for the business and for personal projects. Three things were non-negotiable: an RV door, a vehicle lift, and dedicated woodworking space. The team sat down and planned the layout around how vehicles and equipment would move in and out, and how the building would fit the rest of the property.
The finished shop includes a two-inch insulated roof and wall system for a condensation barrier, a large ceiling fan for air circulation, and a heavily reinforced concrete slab built to carry a 10,000 lb car lift. The RV door rides on a high lift track for extra clearance, and the second door runs on a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth operator with battery backup. Upstairs, an 18' x 40' loft adds storage space, with the eave height raised to 18 feet on that side for extra headroom. The wood shop is fully insulated and drywalled, with HVAC and dust collection built in.
