This two-story barndominium in Colville, WA was 42 years in the making. The owners had dreamed about building on this land for decades. When the time came, they called Steel Structures America, a company they already trusted from a previous shop build on the same property.
“42 years ago. That’s when we started dating and I started bringing her up here.”
Design & Layout
The home includes two-story living quarters, an attached garage, a vaulted great room, and a bonus room. Scissor trusses create an open vaulted ceiling in the living wing. A 6′ x 20′ lean-to off the garage adds covered utility space.
“We always knew we wanted the Scandinavian modern design. Being Scandinavian, this kind of hit home for me. We always knew we wanted some warmth and wood.”
Exterior Finish
The home is sided in Smooth Cedar steel from Metal America, Steel Structures America’s sister company. It looks and feels like real cedar but performs like steel. No staining, no sealing, no rot. When a large group came out for a family reunion, not one guest realized the siding was steel.
“They thought it was wood. And then Dale would walk up and say, ‘Well, look at that, man.’ And he’d knock on it. They’d be blown away.”
Working with Steel Structures America
Shawn, the owner of Steel Structures America, stayed personally involved from design through construction.
“He’s always answered the phone or answered the text. When we throw ideas out, he’s not like, ‘Yeah, no.’ He gets back to us and is all excited. ‘I figured it out. This is what we can do.'”
