52′ x 60′ x 18′ shop with living quarters with 18′ x 60′ x 8′ shed featuring (1) 24′ x 16′ and (1) 10′ x 10′ black anodized modern classic overhead doors, black vinyl window package and 24″ overhangs in ash gray siding with charcoal trim and cedar plank wainscot and accents.
Project Overview
Project #12135 redefines the concept of a “Shop Home” (Shouse). While many steel structures treat living quarters as an afterthought, this North Idaho build integrates a luxury, single-level residence directly into the 18-foot wide lean-to of the main structure.
Designed originally with aging-in-place in mind, the goal was to create a fully accessible, high-end home without the need for stairs or a second-story mezzanine. The result is a seamless blend of industrial durability and residential comfort.
Design & Engineering Features
By utilizing the natural roofline of the lean-to, Steel Structures America engineered vaulted ceilings that transform the 900-square-foot footprint into a large, airy living environment. The 18’ x 50’ floor plan was optimized to include:
- Open-Concept Living: A spacious flow from the living room to the kitchen, perfect for entertaining guests while maintaining a cozy footprint.
- “Zen” Aesthetic: A spa-inspired bathroom featuring wood-look tile and a large walk-in shower, designed to evoke a peaceful, Japanese Zen atmosphere.
- Hidden Utility: Despite the compact size, the home features a full-size stacked washer/dryer, a 50-gallon water heater, and extensive kitchen cabinetry.
- Smart Privacy: A custom green accent wall in the living area conceals the entrance to the master bedroom, keeping private spaces separate from social areas.
Client Vision
“I really just wanted something that looked a little bit more residential with the property and just something a little bit more elevated but still functional.” – Shauneen, Homeowner
This project proves that a steel building doesn’t have to look like a barn on the inside. With high-end finishes, dual-shade window treatments, and residential-grade carpentry, this lean-to conversion serves as a primary-quality residence for family and guests.
