Dalton Gardens sits in Idaho’s Kootenai County, where winters are heavy and buildings need to hold up. Steel Structures America built this 40′ x 60′ x 16′ post-frame shop in Dalton Gardens, ID with that in mind. The main building covers 2,400 square feet of enclosed workspace. Additionally, a 12’x60′ open lean-to runs the full sidewall length, adding 720 more square feet of covered outdoor space. Together, the two structures give the owner over 3,100 square feet of covered capacity for vehicles, equipment, and storage.
The main structure is a standard gable with a 4/12 roof pitch. Steel Structures America built out both gable ends and extended the front gable 4 feet beyond the building line. Above the entry, a 14-foot decorative timber truss gives the building a custom architectural presence. Steel Structures America also installed individual canopies over each overhead door. Together, the timber truss and canopies frame the front elevation with a finished, purposeful look that goes well beyond a standard shop build.
Beyond the entry details, the bottom-loaded truss system is one of the most practical features in this build. Specifically, the trusses incorporate ceiling joists throughout the main span. That means the owner has a ready ceiling plane for insulation or interior finish work. Furthermore, a vented ridge draws heat and moisture out of the space above the ceiling.
The open lean-to runs 12 feet wide and 60 feet long along the sidewall, with a 9-foot-plus eave height. First, it gives covered access the full length of the building. It also clears tall trailers and equipment without issue.
Steel Structures America finished the entire exterior in ULG Black. The roof, wall panels, body corners, fascia, soffit, wainscot, and all trim run in the same color throughout. As a result, this is a fully monochromatic build with a sharp, modern presence that reads cleanly on the property.
Steel Structures America installed 2-foot fully enclosed, level-return overhangs on all eaves and gables. The overhangs are vented and run continuously around the building. Similarly, both the fascia and soffit follow the all-black color scheme, tying the roofline detail together on every side.
Two 12’x14′ insulated overhead doors on the front gable provide dual wide-access entry. Both doors feature a cottage panel design with a single row of windows and an opener. Five windows serve the building: two double-pane 4×3 vinyl units and three 4’x22.5″ vinyl fixed windows along the sidewall. Also, a 3’x6’8″ Armor guard walk-in door serves as the main pedestrian entry.
Posts were set on Perma-Columns®, which keep all wood above grade and extend the life of the building. Steel Structures America engineered the structure for a 50 PSF roof snow load and 110 MPH wind speed. Additionally, the site carries Exposure C classification. Throughout the walls, 2×8 commercial-grade girts with house wrap deliver a tight, durable wall assembly that performs above standard construction.
The bottom-loaded trusses include ceiling joists across the full main span. On top of that, the 4-inch concrete slab includes fibermesh reinforcement, a smooth finish, and saw cut joints. The slab covers the main building, the lean-to, and an approach apron in front of the overhead doors.
