This 40′ x 48′ x 16′ post-frame shop in Ellensburg, WA delivers 1,920 square feet of working space. The site sits on a rural property in Kittitas County. Steel Structures America built the structure to handle the specific demands of the high desert climate. That means engineering for heavy snow loads and open-terrain wind exposure. The layout prioritizes equipment access and long-term use.
Design & Layout
The building is a standard gable with a 4:12 roof pitch and 12-foot truss spacing. Steel Structures America framed out both gable ends. The front gable features a 16-foot extended overhang and a 6×6 decorative timber truss. Together, these details give the entry elevation a finished, custom character that goes well beyond a standard shop.
Three Dutch doors run along the sidewall, each positioned within a 12-foot bay. This layout gives the owner direct, independent access to every section of the building. Additionally, a 16’x14′ overhead door on the gable end handles large vehicle and equipment entry.
Exterior & Features
Steel Structures America used Arctic White for the body panels and outside corners. ULG Black covers the roof, trim, fascia, soffit, and door and window trim. The high-contrast finish reads cleanly against the open landscape surrounding Ellensburg.
Both eaves include a 24-inch fully enclosed, raked-style soffit. The soffit and fascia run in ULG Black throughout, tying the roofline to the trim detail on all four sides.
The 16’x14′ overhead door features a Ranch design in a wood grain finish with a long raised panel. Windows run across the top row, and the door includes a chain hoist. Along the sidewall, three steel-framed Dutch doors give direct access to each bay. Furthermore, a 3’x6’8″ metal jamb walk door in black serves as the main pedestrian entry.
Engineering a 40x48x16 Post-Frame Shop for Ellensburg, WA
Posts were set on Perma-Columns®, which keep all wood above grade and extend the life of the building. Steel Structures America engineered the structure for a 50 PSF roof snow load and 90 MPH wind shear. Also, the site carries Exposure C classification, appropriate for the open terrain around Ellensburg. Moreover, 2-inch vinyl-backed fiberglass insulation on the roof helps manage heat and condensation inside the working space.
