In this episode of Steel Structures Stories, we’re touring a commercial barndominium in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho that was built to combine work and home in one flexible space.

This project is a great example of how a post frame building can support both a business and a home under one roof. Downstairs, the space functions as a storefront, shop, and flexible work area. Upstairs, it transitions into a comfortable and thoughtfully designed living space that feels open, warm, and personal.

John and Arlene originally planned to build this project turnkey, but once they saw the cost, they decided to take a different approach. Instead of walking away from the idea, they built the shell first and finished the interior over time. That decision allowed them to move forward without overextending financially, and years later the building has grown into exactly what they envisioned.

One of the biggest advantages of this building is how adaptable it is. The open layout makes it easy to rework spaces as needs change. The upstairs living area feels much larger than its footprint because of the openness, and the home gym, complete with Peloton bikes and adjustable lighting, shows how personal touches can completely transform a space. There is also a dedicated craft and storage room that makes hosting family gatherings and events simple and organized.

From a construction standpoint, this project includes a 50 foot by 100 foot post-frame building. The structure uses a Perma Column post system, 29 gauge steel roofing and siding, multiple insulated overhead doors including a glass overhead door at the front, and lots of windows.

This tour shows what is possible when a building is designed for real life, real business, and long term flexibility. Whether you are thinking about a commercial shop, a barndominium, or a live work space, post-frame construction gives you options that traditional buildings often cannot.

What started as five acres and a dream of something more than trailer living quickly turned into the perfect multi-purpose steel building solution. In this in-progress project located in Old Town, our customer shares his experience designing a 40' x 60' steel shop with future living quarters, built to support both workspace needs and long-term plans for his family.

From early discussions about building orientation, window placement, and overhead door sizes, to accommodating campers, equipment, and a future loft, this project was carefully customized every step of the way. The overhead doors were strategically positioned on the eave wall to maximize access while preserving structural efficiency and keeping costs under control.

Inside, the building is being prepped for a second level with future living quarters. The structure is built on a Perma‑Column foundation, eliminating wood in the ground and providing long-term durability. For insulation, the shop area features SSA’s standard 2.5” fiberglass-backed metal building insulation, with the flexibility to upgrade later for the residential space.

At just seven days into construction, the progress is already impressive, with the full build expected to wrap in a matter of weeks. The overall project timeline—from contract execution to nearing completion—spanned just a few short months, even with permitting and financing in the mix.

Hear directly from the owner about his experience, the design process, working with our team, and what this building means for his future—including plans to restore a classic El Camino inside this very shop.

If you’re considering a steel shop, barndominium, or multi-purpose building, this project is a great example of how flexible and efficient the process can be.

A Horseman’s Ideal Barn & Arena | Custom 70x160 Equestrian Build in Fort Collins, Colorado

This Fort Collins horseman knew exactly what he wanted in an equestrian facility. After seeing barns around the world, he was looking for craftsmanship, practicality, and long-term value.

This 70x160x16 equestrian barn and riding arena was built around real, everyday horse care. Custom stall fronts, Dutch doors, tongue-and-groove finishes, and real glass panels replaced standard light panels—details chosen with purpose, not excess.

After comparing four quotes, he found Steel Structures America delivered the best overall value. Estimator Rick Peak welcomed every custom request, and the build moved from start to finish in just over five weeks with a skilled, efficient crew.

Today, the structure supports a growing breeding operation. Originally planned for winter stalling and training, it now serves as a comfortable, adaptable space for broodmares and their foals each spring—proof that a well-built post-frame structure can adapt as needs change.

Steel Structures America builds custom post-frame buildings designed for the way people live, work, train, and care for their animals.
