Steel Structures America built this 40′ × 60′ × 16′ post-frame shop in Mica, Washington for an owner with two very different passions: drag racing and piano. The main shop handles a race car that has been on the strip since 1966. The attached 16′ × 24′ lean-to houses a family piano built in Boston in 1904. “We went 40 ft wide and then we added on the piano room cuz my piano won’t fit in our tiny house,” the owner explained. “We made it pretty simple. One window, two big doors, 14 ft high, so we can do about anything we want to in here.”
The project started with a conversation at a local fair. “We happened to talk to Mark at a fair or something like that. Anyway, and we got started on it and it’s just been a great building and Steel Structures America was an absolute joy to work with.”
The piano has been in the family for decades. “My piano my dad bought in about 1953. Made back in Boston 1904, 1905. It’s just been a great piano. I try to play couple three, four times a week and I play in at church every once in a while.” The drag car has just as much history. “This thing I bought from the original owner out of Dayton. It’s kind of always been a drag race car. I’ve been drag racing since 1966.” The paint job is Pittsburgh tractor paint from North 40. “I call it a 2020 car. 20 ft and 20 mph. It looks pretty good.”
The owner had built garages before and could tell the difference with this crew. “I’ve worked with people that really know what building a building is like. I’ve built a couple other garages. I could pretty much tell these guys. They really knew what they were doing.” The crew kept everything precise. “The crew was just excellent. They did everything in a timely manner and this building is straight and true and level and it just worked out really good.”
Spokane County required full inspections on the new construction. Everything passed. When a piece of metal got dinged during the build, the team handled it immediately. “He was Johnny on the spot and got that changed.” The owner summed it up simply: “It was just a good process. He knew what was going on.”
