North Idaho Barndominium Tour Episode 2 | Shop Exterior & Lifestyle Design (Project #12135)

North Idaho Barndominium Tour Episode 2 | Shop Exterior & Lifestyle Design (Project #12135)

In Episode 2 of the North Idaho barndominium tour, Steel Structures America steps outside the finished living quarters and focuses on the structure itself. This episode highlights the exterior design, building envelope, insulation system, and the lifestyle vision that shaped the entire project. Homeowner Brian and designer Craig reflect on how the shop came together.

First Impressions & Exterior Details

From the moment you walk up, this North Idaho barndominium shop makes a statement. The finished building closely matches the original renderings — clean lines, balanced proportions, and a modern steel look set against a ranch-style backdrop.

The exterior features smoke glass overhead doors in the front and glass-panel doors in the rear. They allow natural light to filter inside while maintaining privacy. The reflections off the glass add character, especially in the morning light.

The siding combines concealed fastener vertical steel with corrugated panels running in the opposite direction. That subtle contrast gives the building a modern edge without overpowering the rural setting. It feels intentional. Clean. Elevated.

And as Brian joked in the episode — who’s ever said they have too much shop space?

Designing for Lifestyle, Not Just Living Space

This barndominium shop with living quarters in North Idaho was designed around a lifestyle decision. The homeowners chose a smaller primary living footprint and a larger “fun footprint.”

Instead of maximizing bedrooms and formal spaces, they prioritized flexibility.

The shop can:

  • Host family gatherings
  • Accommodate holiday parties
  • Serve as a wedding venue
  • Store trailers and equipment
  • Transition from work mode to entertainment mode in minutes

That kind of versatility is hard to achieve in a traditional home.

Craig explains that every part of the structure was planned with intention — from layout flow to long-term durability.

That flexibility is the heart of this North Idaho barndominium shop tour.

Building Envelope & Insulation Breakdown

Behind the finished steel exterior is a highly efficient wall system designed for North Idaho’s four-season climate.

The structure includes:

  • Full plywood sheathing around the entire building
  • 2 inches of spray foam insulation between 2×6 framing
  • Additional R19 insulation layered over that
  • Drywall interior finish

This layered insulation system creates a tightly sealed, energy-efficient envelope.

The result?

  • Stable indoor temperatures
  • Reduced heating and cooling demands
  • Improved comfort for guests
  • Long-term energy savings

This isn’t a basic pole barn. It’s a performance-driven steel building designed to function year-round.

Solar on a Pole Barn: Why It Works So Well

Pole barns and post-frame structures are ideal for solar panels because of their large, uninterrupted roof spans and structural strength. This building includes an 18-kilowatt solar system positioned for strong southern exposure. Excess energy is sent back to the utility and banked for later use. Combined with the high-performance insulation, the building operates at exceptional efficiency levels.

It’s a smart use of roof space and a forward-thinking investment.
